Profile of Nippon Association for Librarianship


Basic Information


Objective

The Nippon Association for Librarianship, founded in 1946, is the oldest and largest association for library research in Japan.
The object of the association is to promote the research onlibrarianship. Any person, library, or other organization may become a member upon payment of the dues.

Organization

Board of Trustees:

The governing body of NAL is comprised of 25 members elected at large.

Board of Directors:

The central management board of the NAL is comprised of 10 members who are elected at large, and 5 members who are recommended by the Board of Directors and approved by the Board of Trustees.

Committees:

Appointed by the Board of Directors, They are responsible for areas assigned to them. The number of committees varies from time to time.

Study Groups:

A membership initiative group may be set up by the Board of Directors. Each group studies a specific area or topic.

Committees

Toshokan-Kai (The Library World) Editorial Committee:
To be responsible for the publication of the Association's official scholarly journal Toshokan-Kai (The Library World).
Research Committee:
To stimulate and direct the research needs. To be responsible for the planning and coordinating of our annual conference, annual library seminar, and monthly study meetings.
Regional Seminar Committee:
To be responsible for the planning and implementation of regional seminars, which are usually held in three different regions each year.
Membership Promotion Committee:
To make programs and procedures to attract new members.
Library Research Award Committee:
To select the most outstanding article from the articles published in the preceeding two years of Toshokan-Kai within the criteria governing the award.
International Committee:
To be responsible for the Association's international relations programs and initiatives.
Publishing Committee:
To make policies concerning publishing and to be responsible for all of the publications except Toshokan-Kai (The Library World) related ones.
Election Board:
To certify the results of the biennual election of the association.

Study Groups

A study group is a membership initiative group established to promote reserch on a specific area or topic.
The following groups are in currently active.

Library Research Award

An annual award consisting of 100,000YEN ($1,000)and a certificate, presented to the author of the most outstanding article published in the two preceeding years of Toshokan-Kai, within the terms, definitions, and criteria governing the award.
This is from an endowment, begun with a donation by Former President Koich Mori of 2,000,000YEN ($20,000). This Fund now amounts to over 3,000,000YEN ($30,000) through donations by various contributors.

Conventions/Meetings

The Annual Conference, the Annual Library Seminar, Monthly Study Meetings and Regional Seminars are the major meetings of the association.

Annual Conference:

Usually held in February or March. This two day conference consists of study groups' reports, personal research presentations, symposium, as well as a reception.

Annual Library Seminar:

Usually held in September. This two day seminar often takes up the current hot issues, through lectures and intensive discussions.

Monthly Study Meetings:

Usually held nine times a year. These two hour meetings offers any member the opportunity to address his/her concerns, or to report his/her research in full detail.
This kind of meeting is also held in Nagoya (Aichi Prefecture) area.

Regional Seminars:

This new program begun in November 1996.
NAL has nine geographical areas (regions) and foreign areas. Each member belongs one of these regions. This program intends to hold seminars in three deifferent regions once in a year. Suggestions and participation of all members is both appreciated and welcomed
